2.1 Wat is de relevantie van een adequaat handschrift?

Conclusies
Niveau 1. Het is aangetoond dat lezen en schrijven multimodaal worden aangeleerd en gerepresenteerd. Het schrijvend leren van letters geeft een significant betere herkenning bij het lezen dan het typend leren van letters. Ook de spelling van eenvoudige woorden is significant beter door deze schrijvend te oefenen, dan door deze te oefenen met behulp van kaartjes of een computer bij kinderen uit groep 3. (A2 Longcamp et al., 2003, 2005, 2006a, 2006b, 2008 en B Cunningham; Stanovich, 1990)
Niveau 2. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat de notitiesnelheid is gekoppeld is aan de mate van geautomatiseerd schrijven. Hoe meer geautomatiseerd het schrijfproces verloopt, hoe beter het werkgeheugen kan worden gebruikt voor cognitieve vaardigheden, zoals het produceren van tekst. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat het schrijven bij kinderen van 9 jaar nog niet zodanig is geautomatiseerd dat cognitieve taken tegelijk met het schrijven kunnen worden uitgevoerd. Niveau 3. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat de kwaliteit van het schrijven van invloed is op het cijfer c.q. de waardering voor taal en spelling. (B Graham et al., 1998)
Niveau 3. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat het falen bij het schrijven door kinderen herkend wordt en leidt tot mijden van het schrijven hetgeen een negatieve spiraal veroorzaakt. Vaak hangt het onvermogen samen met een niet-onderkende klinische oorzaak. (C Berninger; Colwell, 1985; Berninger et al., 1991; Dunford et al., 2005; Engel et al., 2009)

Noot 1 Over de relatie tussen schrijven en (leren) lezen zijn 8 artikelen geselecteerd, waaronder 5 artikelen op A2-niveau. De relatie tussen een adequate notitiesnelheid en het produceren van tekst (stellen) is door Peverly (2006) beschreven in 4 werkgeheugenmodellen. Deze modellen stemmen overeen met het binnen de kinderfysiotherapie meer bekende ‘Model voor handschriftproductie’ van Van Galen en Smits-Engelsman (Van Galen, 1991; Smits-Engelsman & Nijhuis-Van der Sanden, 2006) (zie paragraaf 2.2 en paragraaf 5.3). De modellen hebben als uitgangspunt dat het verbeteren van basisvaardigheden dé manier is om de efficiëntie van een verwerkingssysteem met beperkte capaciteit te verbeteren en dat het automatiseren van het schrijven van letters om die reden een effectieve interventie is. De modellen verschillen in het accent dat wordt gelegd op de verschillende basisvaardigheden: naast het automatiseren van het schrijven van letters kan het accent ook liggen op het automatiseren van klank-tekenkoppeling of op het gebruikmaken van leerstrategieën. Peverly (2006) stelt dat door middel van oefenen de basisvaardigheid schrijven verbetert, waardoor de werkgeheugencapaciteit beschikbaar komt voor denkprocesssen van een hogere orde, zoals de spelling van een woord of de opzet van een verhaallijn. In 2 recente studies onder respectievelijk 85 en 151 psychologiestudenten aan de universiteit van Pennsylvania onderzochten Peverly et al. (2007) wat van belang is voor het snel kunnen maken van leesbare notities: de souplesse van het spraakvermogen, het verbaal werkgeheugen of het snel en soepel kunnen schrijven van letters.
De laatste variabele is gemeten met de alfabettaak: de snelheid waarmee deze taak kan worden uitgevoerd, wordt bepaald door de fijne motoriek en de klank-tekenkoppeling. De alfabettaak bleek een significante correlatie (variërend van 0,19-0,50) te hebben met alle testvariabelen en bleek de enige consistente voorspeller te zijn voor de kwaliteit van de aantekeningen. De kwaliteit van aantekeningen op haar beurt bleek weer de enige voorspeller te zijn voor het vlot en leesbaar schrijven van de samenvatting van dezelfde lezing. De onderzoekers concludeerden dat er een acceptabele mate van vloeiendheid en automatisme moet zijn om snel genoeg te kunnen schrijven, zodat het werkgeheugen kan worden gebruikt voor cognitieve vaardigheden, zoals het produceren van tekst.
Olive en Kellogg (2002) onderzochten de gelijktijdige activatie van deze lagere en hogere processen bij het schrijven van teksten zowel bij volwassenen als bij kinderen. De groep 9-jarige kinderen leek een alternerende aandachtsstrategie toe te passen: zij verdeelden hun aandacht tussen het (over)schrijven van een tekst en het snel reageren op een auditief signaal, terwijl de volwassenen goed in staat bleken beide taken tegelijkertijd uit te voeren. Het verschil tussen kinderen en volwassenen moest worden gezocht in de grote eisen die de motorische uitvoering van het schrijven aan kinderen stelt, luidde de conclusie.
Longcamp et al. toonden in 5 studies (2003, 2005, 2006a, 2006b, 2008) de cruciale rol aan van het (leren) schrijven. Zij bestudeerden de rol van schrijven op de visuele herkenning van letters bij jonge kinderen (3-5 jaar) in een studie (2005) waarin eenvoudige woorden in een verhaalvorm in hoofdletters waren weergegeven. Een deel van de kinderen had die hoofdletters al schrijvende geleerd en een deel met behulp van een toetsenbord. Na training kon de oudste groep kinderen (gemiddelde leeftijd 53 maanden) de handgeschreven hoofdletters significant beter herkennen dan de getypte letters (p 0,02). Deze resultaten stemmen overeen met de uitkomsten van een onderzoek van Cunningham en Stanovich (1990) onder leerlingen uit groep 3. De spelling van eenvoudige woorden bleek significant beter te zijn in de conditie waarin deze waren geoefend door de woorden te schrijven, dan in condities waarin vergelijkbare woorden waren geleerd met behulp van kaartjes of met een computer. Een studie (Longcamp et al., 2006a) waarin volwassenen Bengaalse letters leerden door deze te schrijven of te typen, leverde vergelijkbare resultaten op. fMRI bevestigde deze perceptie-actierelatie (Longcamp etal., 2003). Zowel de visuele presentatie van de door proefpersonen geschreven letters als gedrukte hoofdletters bleken een deel van de premotorische schors te activeren. Ditzelfde gebied bleek actief wanneer de proefpersonen zelf letters schreven; bij het tonen van pseudoletters bleef het desbetreffende hersengebied inactief. De auteurs trokken de conclusie dat de cerebrale representatie van letters niet enkel en alleen visueel is, maar dat er sprake is van een neuraal netwerk bestaande uit multimodale componenten. De visuele vorm, de auditieve weergave, het motorisch programma en de geassocieerde kinesthetische feedback worden opgeslagen in het geheugen, niet als afzonderlijke eenheden, maar als multimodale representaties, zo stelden zij, wat betekent dat er bij perceptie van vormen en cijfers, lezen en schrijven altijd een multimodaal neuraal netwerk wordt geactiveerd (Longcamp et al., 2003). Dit betekent ook dat er feitelijk tijdens motorische acties altijd sprake is van gekoppelde processen. Het bestaan van een dergelijke perceptie-actiekoppeling is bevestigd in onderzoek met magneto-encephalography (MEG), waarbij een hogere activatie bij het presenteren van handgeschreven tekst is geconstateerd (Longcamp et al., 2006b). De auteurs veronderstelden dat het brein op basis van de statische (letter)informatie de voor het schrijven noodzakelijke beweging ‘reconstrueert’. Dit is ook aangetoond in een fMRI-studie onder volwassenen (Longcamp et al., 2008): bij visuele herkenning van (gedrukte) letters werden ook de bijbehorende bewegingen in het geheugen geactiveerd.
Noot 2 De relatie tussen de kwaliteit van het schrijven en het zelfvertrouwen
Noot 2 In 5 studies, waarvan 4 op C-niveau, is de relatie beschreven tussen schrijven en emotionele aspecten. Een kind met een keurig handschrift blijkt niet alleen een hoger cijfer voor schrijven te krijgen, ook de kwaliteit van de tekst (taal/spelling) wordt bij een keurig handschrift hoger gewaardeerd (Graham et al.,1998). Kinderen met problemen bij het schrijven daarentegen, worden op school veelvuldig en langdurig geconfronteerd met hun falen. Dat bleek uit een onderzoek bij kinderen met Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) in Engeland (Dunford et al., 2005); waarin de Perceived Efficacy and Goal Setting (PEGS) werd afgenomen: het schrijven zelf werd vaak als problematisch aangeduid, zowel door de kinderen (43%), hun ouders (31%) als hun leerkrachten (79,4%). Ook werd zorg om het schrijven het vaakst genoemd (29%) door zowel kinderen, hun ouders en hun leerkrachten.
Ook in recent onderzoek is met behulp van de PEGS (Missiuna et al., 2004) aangetoond dat dysgrafische kinderen een negatief gevoel hebben over hun schrijfprestatie en de tijdsdruk die zij ervaren bij het schrijven. Hun gevoel van eigenwaarde staat niet alleen op school, maar ook tijdens hun vrijetijdsbesteding onder druk (Engel-Yeger et al., 2009). Bovendien kunnen kinderen het schrijven gaan mijden vanuit de gedachte ik kan het toch niet. Door de negatieve spiraal waarin deze kinderen terechtkomen, stagneert de ontwikkeling van het schrijven (Berninger & Colwell, 1985; Berninger et al., 1991). Deze onderzoekers vonden een samenhang tussen de kwaliteit van het schrijven en neuropsychologische, taalkundige en/of cognitieve stoornissen en pleitten voor nauwkeurig klinisch onderzoek om deze stoornissen aan het licht brengen.
